Ingredients

  • 6-10 photos spanning the friendship (the older and more embarrassing, the better)
  • A mix of selfies, screenshots, group shots, and at least one photo neither of you remembers taking
  • Fun stickers from the Sticker Library -- hearts, stars, arrows, BFF badges, washi tape strips
  • A playful hand-drawn or rounded font for captions
  • A warm, light background color -- cream, soft peach, or sandy beige
  • Optional: a screenshot of a legendary text conversation, a concert ticket photo, a meme only the two of you understand

Steps

  1. Open Freestyle and raid your camera roll

Tap Freestyle for a blank canvas -- this collage needs chaos, not a grid. Scroll all the way back through your photos. You want the full arc: the early awkward phase, the peak chaos era, the comfortable silence years. Import 6-10 photos that make you laugh out loud or feel something in your chest.

  2. Scatter photos with confident looseness

Place photos at slight angles, overlapping edges casually. Pinch to resize freely -- the chaotic selfie from 2019 can be tiny, the golden hour beach photo can be large. Rotate a few just a couple of degrees. The arrangement should feel like someone dumped a pile of prints on a table and you liked how they landed.

  3. Unify the lighting across years

Photos spanning a decade of friendship will have wildly different cameras and lighting. Tap each photo and open Photo Editing -- nudge warmth up slightly and pull saturation down just a touch. You want every photo to feel like it belongs in the same pile, even if one's from a flip phone in 2016 and another's from last month.

  4. Set a warm, easy background

Swipe to Backgrounds and pick a light cream or warm sand tone. This collage is going to be visually busy in the best way, so the background needs to stay calm and let the photos do the talking.

  5. Sticker bomb the gaps

Open the Sticker Library and search for washi tape, hearts, stars, and arrows. Tuck washi tape strips across photo corners. Drop a heart near the best photo. If you saved a screenshot of a legendary text exchange, shrink it down and tuck it between two photos like a hidden easter egg. These details are what make it feel personal, not generic.

  6. Write the captions only you two understand

Tap Text and add short, punchy lines near specific photos. "The night we do not talk about." "You still owe me for this." "Peak us." Choose a handwritten-looking font and keep it small. Use the Doodle Tool to draw arrows pointing between photos or to scribble a star. Not every photo needs a caption -- just the ones that already have a story.

  7. Add a title and save

Somewhere at the top or bottom, type a simple dedication: the years of friendship, their name, or a phrase that means something. "10 years of this" or "For [Name], who was there for all of it." Save at full resolution and share directly to their messages, or post it to Instagram on their birthday.

Variations

Birthday Gift Print

Save at the highest resolution and print on matte photo paper at 8x10. Frame it. Wrap it badly on purpose. The presentation does not matter -- the content will do the work.

Animated Story Version

Use Animation to make each photo pop in one at a time, building the chaos layer by layer. Export as a video and post it as an Instagram Story or TikTok on their birthday. Let the group chat do the rest.

Duo Version

Make two copies with slightly different photo selections and captions, one for each of you. Same layout, same background, different perspectives on the same friendship. Share both side by side.

Tips

  • Blurry photos are not flaws in a friendship collage -- they are evidence of a good time
  • Warm sand tones (#D4A574) as a background make every skin tone and lighting condition feel cohesive
  • Use Magic Cutout to lift just the two of you out of a group photo -- instant sticker of your friendship
  • The most meaningful photo is rarely the most photogenic one -- trust the feeling over the quality
