Polaroid Photo Sizes: How Big Is a Polaroid, Exactly?
The measured geometry of a Polaroid 600 / SX-70 print — 88 × 107 mm, a 79 mm square window, a 23.5 mm chin — compared against Polaroid Go, instax mini, SQUARE and WIDE, with every figure sourced.
Everyone can picture a Polaroid, and almost nobody can draw one. Ask someone to sketch it and you get a white square with a thin strip along the bottom: too square, and the strip far too thin. Both errors are invisible on their own and both are obvious the moment a real print is lying next to the drawing. The proportions of that piece of paper are strangely specific, and they are the reason the shape reads as Polaroid rather than as photo with a border.
There is also more than one shape. “Instant photo” now covers five living formats with genuinely different geometry, and the differences are larger than the marketing suggests — one of them holds about a third of the picture of another. Here are the measured numbers for all five, starting with the print most people mean by “a Polaroid”.

Two things fall out of that table that most people get wrong.
The image is square, but the print is not. The window is 79 mm on both sides. The paper around it is not symmetrical, which is what makes the object read as portrait while the picture inside it reads as square.
A third of a Polaroid is paper. The 79 mm window covers 6,241 mm² of a 9,416 mm² print — about 66%. The remaining 34% is white, and roughly two-thirds of that is the chin alone.
The numbers also check themselves, which is the fastest way to test any Polaroid template you find anywhere else:

- down: 4.5 + 79 + 23.5 = 107
If a frame you have been handed doesn’t close like that, it isn’t the format it claims to be.
How it compares to instax and Polaroid Go
“Polaroid size” is the question people type, but half the time the print in their hand is an instax or a Polaroid Go, which are different objects entirely. Every instax and Polaroid Go figure below is quoted from the manufacturer’s own specification page; the 600 row repeats the geometry above.

The note, because it is more useful than a guess. No outer print size is given for instax SQUARE and WIDE. Fujifilm states the picture size for both, but the outer size is either absent or inconsistent — the WIDE film page gives 10.6 × 8.4 cm while 108 × 86 mm circulates widely elsewhere. Rather than pick the tidier number, the cell is empty. Measure the print you own if you are cutting a mat; if you are composing a picture, the image area is the number that matters anyway.
The practical consequence. A square picture is a square picture: a photo composed for a Polaroid 600 drops into an instax SQUARE frame without recomposition, because both windows are square and only the scale changes. An instax mini will not take it, because its picture is a 62 × 46 mm portrait rectangle — roughly 4:3 standing up. That is the most common reason a template “fits” on screen and crops somebody’s head off in print.
Two numbers that surprise people. An instax WIDE picture covers 6,138 mm² against a Polaroid 600 window’s 6,241 mm² — within 2% of each other, in completely different shapes. And the Polaroid Go has the smallest picture of the five: 2,162 mm² against an instax mini’s 2,852 mm², about three-quarters. Choosing a format for a scrapbook page? That is the number to decide on, not the brand.
The chin is the whole tell
The wide white band at the bottom is not a design flourish. An integral print is a self-contained darkroom — the chemistry that develops the picture travels inside the paper — and the extra white at one end is structural. The caption-writing habit came afterwards, because there was somewhere to write.
Which means the chin is also the number that fakes it or doesn’t, and the failure is worth showing because we shipped it ourselves. An earlier version of our Polaroid maker built the frame from guessed proportions:

A chin two-thirds of the depth it should be, on a print nearly a tenth too square. Nobody could have told you the numbers were off, and everybody could see the result: it read as a white square with a photo in it. Not as a Polaroid. That gap — between “the proportions are off by a few per cent” and “this object is not the thing” — is why it is worth having the measurements at all.
Printing one at true size
If you want a print that measures 88 × 107 mm in the hand, the pixel arithmetic is fixed:

The export runs comfortably above the 300 ppi print threshold at true size, and still clears it when you enlarge to a 5 in tall print — which is the size most people actually want, because it survives being glued into a journal without looking dainty.
Print on matte paper rather than glossy. A real integral print has a slight surface texture, and gloss is the single detail that gives away an inkjet reproduction faster than any dimension does.
The square problem
The Polaroid window is square and your photos are not. Most phone cameras shoot 4:3, so squaring one up costs 25% of the long side, and the tool takes that crop from the centre unless you intervene. On a landscape shot of a room this is invisible. On a photo of two people standing apart it is a disaster. The same applies to instax SQUARE at 62 × 62 mm; the mini and the WIDE are the two formats that take a phone photo without a fight.
Decide the crop deliberately before you frame it: crop or letterbox the photo to a square first, check that nothing important sits near the edges, then wrap it. Our Polaroid maker also offers portrait (1.25) and landscape (0.75) windows, which the real film never had — useful when the photo genuinely cannot be squared, but they are our invention, not the format’s, and a set of prints mixing window shapes reads as inconsistent rather than as varied.
When it looks wrong
It reads as a white square, not a Polaroid. The chin is too shallow. Check it against 0.297 of the image width — nearly a third — which is deeper than instinct suggests every single time.
The caption doesn’t fit. The chin is a single line by design; that is what it was on the real object. If you need a paragraph, it belongs outside the print, not inside the band.
It prints soft. You are under 300 ppi for the physical size you asked for. Work backwards from the table above: at 5 in tall you need roughly 1,230 px across the short edge to hold 300 ppi, and rather more if you plan to enlarge again later.
It doesn’t sit right next to real prints on the page. Measure the aspect ratio: width ÷ height should be 0.822. Templates that come out near 0.88 are the common error, and a slightly-too-square print in a spread of real ones looks like a printing mistake rather than a stylistic choice.
The prints in your album are all slightly the wrong size. Check which format the album was cut for. The three instax picture areas share a 62 mm dimension and differ on the other one — 46, 62, then 99 mm — so a mini sits in a SQUARE pocket with a gap down one side, and a WIDE sits in neither.
The subject is half out of the window. That is the square crop, not the frame. Fix it before the frame goes on, not after.
Framing and matting an instant print
An instant print already carries its own white border, so a wide mat gives you two frames arguing with each other with a stripe of photograph trapped between. Keep it narrow. The gallery convention of 8–12% of the longest side works out at:
- Polaroid 600 / SX-70 / i-Type (107 mm long side) → 8.6–12.8 mm
- instax mini (86 mm long side) → 6.9–10.3 mm
- Polaroid Go (66.6 mm long side) → 5.3–8.0 mm
Add about 30% to the bottom margin, as with any mat. If you want the generous magazine margin instead, mat a set of three or four as a single piece — the group can carry a wide border that no individual instant print can.

Why is the bottom border so much bigger than the others?
Because an integral print carries its own developing chemistry inside the paper, so the band is structural rather than decorative. Writing captions there is a habit that grew up around a piece of engineering.
