    Get the picture back off an old film negative

    Hold a negative up to a window, photograph it with your phone, and drop it here. Negative → photo is the default mode: it inverts, then stretches each colour channel between its own limits, which is how the orange mask baked into colour film gets cancelled. A straight invert leaves the familiar cyan cast — measured at 49/255 too much blue on a test negative, against 2–4 for this mode.

    Straight invert flips colours the way a real 35mm negative looks on the strip. Use it as artwork for a music release, a band poster, or to demonstrate the analog aesthetic. Pair with Film Grain at low strength for the strip-of-film feel.

    Cyanotypes (Anna Atkins, 1843) are the OG blue prints — silhouettes of plants on UV-exposed paper. Run a flower or fern photo through Cyanotype mode and you've got a digital version of an Anna Atkins specimen plate. Print on watercolor paper.

    Blueprint mode pushes everything toward deep blue with white linework. On a sketch, line drawing, or hand-drawn floorplan, it produces an authentic engineering-blueprint feel. Frame for a workshop wall.

    X-ray-feel imagery for design projects

    X-ray mode produces a high-contrast B&W invert — bones-and-shadows feel without an actual X-ray. Useful for medical-themed editorial, horror movie posters, or designed visual metaphors of 'see-through'.

Frequently asked

How do I turn a film negative back into a normal photo? +

Photograph the negative against a bright, even light — a window works, a phone screen showing white works better — crop to the frame, then drop it here on the default Negative → photo mode. The reason a plain invert is not enough: colour negative film carries an orange mask, so inverting it leaves a strong cyan cast. This mode inverts and then rescales each channel between its own 0.5 / 99.5 percentile, which cancels the mask. Black-and-white negatives need no mask removal, so Straight invert is the cleaner choice for those.

Does the photo upload anywhere? +

No. The pixel inversion runs in your browser. Your photo never touches our servers — we don't run an image pipeline at all.

How is this different from Duotone? +

Duotone maps photo luminance to a two-color gradient (any two colors you pick). Photo Negative inverts colors first, then optionally tints. The starting point is opposite: Duotone treats the photo as tonal info; Negative treats it as color info to flip.

What's a cyanotype? +

A photographic process from 1842 — coat paper with iron salts, lay an object on top, expose to UV light. Where light hits, the paper turns deep cyan; where the object blocks light, paper stays white. This tool fakes the look digitally.

Why does my color photo go grey in X-ray mode? +

X-ray mode strips color entirely — it converts the inverted result to luminance-only and crushes contrast. That's the point: real X-rays show only density, not color. For a tinted invert, use Cyanotype or Darkroom modes.

What do the intensity and contrast sliders do? +

Intensity blends the result with the original: at 100% you get the full effect, at 50% half-and-half for a faded surreal look, at 0% the original passes through unchanged. Contrast bends the tone curve afterwards, and it now works in every mode — it used to be silently ignored in Cyanotype, Blueprint and X-ray.

Can I print these for a wall? +

Yes — JPG export at full source resolution. Cyanotype and Blueprint modes print especially well on cream paper (the slight off-white softens the deep blue). Straight invert prints best on glossy photo paper for that authentic 35mm-strip feel.

Real cyanotypes are made by coating watercolor paper with potassium ferricyanide and ferric ammonium citrate, exposing under UV (sunlight or a UV box), and rinsing in water. Permanent, archival, and astonishingly blue. About $30 in chemistry to start.
